A ring that fits right is vital to comfort and security. Whether you’re shopping online for new jewellery, planning a surprise for a loved one, or are simply curious about your size, getting the measurement is always a good idea.
A professional jeweller is the best place to get the most accurate measurement. However, you can get a reliable estimate at home using simple household items. In this guide, we’ll talk you through two simple steps that help confirm the size of your next piece of jewellery, so that when you put it on, it feels like it was made just for you.
Before You Begin: Pro Tips for Accuracy
You might notice a little change in the size of your fingers over the course of the day, depending on your temperature or activities. For the best results, follow these tips:
- Take measurements in the evening, or during a warm period at the end of the day when fingers are generally slightly larger. Avoid measuring when your hands are cold as this is when your fingers are at their smallest.
- Measure two or three times.
- Keep in mind that your dominant hand tends to be slightly larger, so make sure that you measure the precise finger on the specific hand you want to wear the ring on.
Method 1: The String or Paper Method
This is the most common at-home way to measure your finger circumference.
What You’ll Need:
- An old, non-stretchy piece of string, dental floss, or a thin paper strip about 10cm long.
- A pen with a fine tip or marker.
- A ruler with mm markings.
Instructions:
- Hold your string or piece of paper tight around the base of the finger you are measuring. It needs to be comfortable; not too tight that it constricts, but certainly not too loose that it will slide off.
- With your pen, mark exactly where the string or the paper ends.
- In millimetres (mm), measure the distance from start to pen mark. This number is the circumference of your finger. You can use this measurement to calculate your exact size on a commonly used ring size conversion chart.
Method 2: The Existing Ring Method
If you already have a ring that fits the finger well, you can use it to find your size.
What You’ll Need:
- A ring that fits your finger as you like it.
- A millimetre (mm) marked ruler.
Instructions:
- Place the ruler on the rim of the ring. Measuring the internal diameter of the ring is important; it’s from one inside edge of the ring to the other inside edge. Be cautious not to include the thickness of the metal band.
- Record the measurement in mm. This diameter can then be matched up to the ring size with the aid of a size chart.
Although these home methods can be used to guide you through your purchase, for big purchases – such as an engagement ring or wedding band – we recommend you get professional sizing to ensure ideal placement. We also sell a ring sizer that can be purchased for $3 if you'd like a more precise measurement at home.
Now you know your ring size, it’s time to browse the beautiful ring collection at FAIRLEY and find the perfect fit for you.
